Explore an amazing wilderness area of south County Sligo with your expert archaeologist guide on a special day of the year, the summer solstice. In pagan times, festivals took place at ancient megalithic tombs such as those at Carrowkeel. One of the incredible tombs here is aligned with the setting sun on the 21st June. The roof box (opening at the front of/entrance into the tomb) allows the last few rays of light on this evening to shine into the back burial chamber. The hike in this area is refreshing and will inspire you. It is a karst limestone (rugged limestone) region covered mainly in peat and heather with mountain sheep grazing happily around you!

Hike Duration- 2 hrs

Terrain- uneven track, heather and peat bog. Max height 328m

Time to set off- 6pm

Bring hiking boots, outdoor clothing.
