Fieldtrip to Deerpark Court TombIn Dec 2018, Auriel accompanied our school on an archaeological trip to Deerpark in County Sligo. This was our second full day trip with Auriel and we had a wonderful experience. It’s so wonderful to have an archaeologist to accompany schools on trips to historical sites, as we found that Auriel was able to bring the story and history alive of what looked like a stone circle to the children, or just a bunch of stones. Auriel had prepared lots of wonderful information and presented it to the children in a very interesting, engaging and fun way. On the walk to the monument, Auriel engaged the children with lots of information on the geology surrounding them as well as the flora and fauna of Deerpark. We hope to continue to engage Auriel into the future on historical and geography trips to explore our local environment and area.
Fabulous hike to Carrowkeel TombsAuriel did a brilliant job with our group of 24. She not only knows her stuff but is clearly passionate about this site and the many other historical sites around Sligo. The megalithic tombs at Carrowkeel are magical at any time, but so much more interesting with an archaeologist as your guide. Auriel was also very thorough and professional in her pre-trip communication, making sure everyone would be properly equipped and ready for the rigors of the walk…it takes some effort to get all the way up to the tombs (most of the walk is on farm track, but the last bit is over stepped bog), but all agreed it was so worth it!
Auriel was a pleasure to deal with. Her lessons were well planned and structured and offered a variety of experiences for the children who thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Excellent Spanish Armada TourWe had a lovely day exploring the Sligo coast with Auriel. She’s a very knowledgeable and friendly host and seems fascinated herself by the geology and history of the area. We learned about the wrecked Spanish Armada ships and the adventures of the Spanish survivor De Cuéllar; saw a 5,000-year-old Stone Age wedge tomb; saw tonnes of fossilised coral, and iron seeping through the limestone, all in a really beautiful part of Sligo. What a grand day! Much appreciated and recommended.
2 Days Hiking & WalkingMet up with Auriel for a days hiking up to the Carrowkeel Megalithic Tombs. Had an absolutely fantastic day, really enjoyed her company and the way she gave very informative history talks along the way. I enjoyed it so much I booked on for a second day’s walk out at Streedagh beach. Again, she explained all about the history of the Spanish Armada, the shipwrecks, the ecology, the formation of the mountains, …. I guess the fact she’s trained in Archaeology & Geography and a Masters Degree in Maritime Archaeology and fifteen years experience is a major help! Thanks so much Auriel, till next time.
GuideWe loved our tour with Auriel up to Queen Maeve’s grave! It was such a great experience. She was so informative & knowledgeable about the history of the area, the land and the people that lived around there. She was very kind and friendly and even patient when we were a bit late. We would highly recommend her as a guide anytime!!
Coastal Fieldtrip at Streedagh and Ballintrillick WoodsAuriel spent at full day at our 2-teacher school in April 2018. We went on a long day field trip to Streedagh Beach & Ballintrillick Mines. The children had a fabulous day, meeting and working with a real archaeologist for the day. Auriel did several wonderful hands on child-centred activities with the children, imparted knowledge at a level that engaged the children from all the classes. Auriel covered geology, mythology, archaeology and history with the children on the field trip and really brought the history of our local area to life for the children.
Megalithic Auriel at Seatrails gave us invaluable guidance to the top of Knocknarea to visit the cairn and then to Carrowkeel to explore these phenomenal ancient tombs. She has a wealth of knowledge and was so pleasant and helpful in guiding us to these treasures. We couldn’t have had such a fabulous experience without her.
We were delighted with Auriel’s visit. She brought the children on a heritage trip to Roscommon Castle and facilitated a biodiversity workshop on Loughnennane Park having presented a workshop on Marine Habitats in the school. She was very well prepared, brought plenty of samples of fossils and seaweed and engaged really well with the children. It was a really memorable day.
