Auriel was a pleasure to deal with. Her lessons were well planned and structured and offered a variety of experiences for the children who thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
2 Days Hiking & WalkingMet up with Auriel for a days hiking up to the Carrowkeel Megalithic Tombs. Had an absolutely fantastic day, really enjoyed her company and the way she gave very informative history talks along the way. I enjoyed it so much I booked on for a second day’s walk out at Streedagh beach. Again, she explained all about the history of the Spanish Armada, the shipwrecks, the ecology, the formation of the mountains, …. I guess the fact she’s trained in Archaeology & Geography and a Masters Degree in Maritime Archaeology and fifteen years experience is a major help! Thanks so much Auriel, till next time.
Coastal Fieldtrip at Streedagh and Ballintrillick WoodsAuriel spent at full day at our 2-teacher school in April 2018. We went on a long day field trip to Streedagh Beach & Ballintrillick Mines. The children had a fabulous day, meeting and working with a real archaeologist for the day. Auriel did several wonderful hands on child-centred activities with the children, imparted knowledge at a level that engaged the children from all the classes. Auriel covered geology, mythology, archaeology and history with the children on the field trip and really brought the history of our local area to life for the children.
Amazing hikes to Knocknarea and CarrowkeelWe spent a wonderful day with Auriel, hiking to Queen Maeve’s Tomb on Knocknarea and then up to Carrowkeel with its 5,000-year-old megalithic passage tombs. There are stunning views from each site. We went on a misty rainy day and only caught glimpses through the mist, but it didn’t matter, it was still so beautiful! Auriel is an excellent guide, very knowledgeable about the area, Ireland’s history and fascinating prehistory, and she shared so much! This was one of our best days in Ireland.
Group walks with AurielI have just led two tours to the Sligo area and each time asked Auriel to take over the guiding at Rosses Point, Streedagh strand, as well as on the first occasion (when I had sprained my foot) to Carrowkeel. I cannot recommend Auriel’s tours highly enough. She knows the region around Sligo like the back of her hand, is very well informed about archaeology, history and plants and explains things clearly. She also has a very nice manner and was very responsive to the needs of the various individuals in each of my groups. There was no rushing. We went along at a very comfortable pace and were able to enjoy our surroundings. The trips with Auriel were among the highlights of our visit to Sligo. Although the weather was not perfect, we all had a great time. In fact, two people in the group plan to return to Sligo with their families and go on more of Auriel’s trips. What better recommendation can you have?
Beautiful scenery and informative guideMy partner and I booked a Rosses Point historical guided walk with Auriel. We found this to be both interesting and informative. Auriel was a pleasant and amiable guide who was well researched on the local area. Would definitely try the other walks on our next visit.
Labby RockWe were so impressed with Auriel’s knowledge and enthusiasm on a trip to Labby Rock Portal Tomb that we booked a later walk to Carrowkeel. These sites are over 5,000 years old and Auriel brought them alive for us. This is worth going to Sligo for.
We were delighted with Auriel’s visit. She brought the children on a heritage trip to Roscommon Castle and facilitated a biodiversity workshop on Loughnennane Park having presented a workshop on Marine Habitats in the school. She was very well prepared, brought plenty of samples of fossils and seaweed and engaged really well with the children. It was a really memorable day.
My Favourite Day in Ireland! We had a whirlwind of a day; had lost our passports that morning and were late to the ride because we were trying to track them down. Auriel was extremely understanding and accommodating and allowed us to reschedule with ease. The stables felt like home. Auriel is so energetic and friendly – she made our whole day turn around (even shared her jacket and gloves with me since I wasn’t prepared). From the stables, you can see the most amazing views of the beach and nearby countryside. Our ride touched every part of that! It wasn’t only scenic, but Auriel is filled with knowledge. She gave us so much history of every area we visited and more. She was also extremely patient as I was a beginner and my boyfriend better at riding. She spent time with us both on the ride. At the end, she shared hot chocolate and treats and showed us her expansive collection of photos that related to the history we shared. It was an unforgettable experience. If you come across Sligo, you MUST go on one of her rides!
